Trivia One of the first scenes to be filmed called for Ingrid Bergman and Anthony Perkins to share a passionate kiss.
Bergman had found a similar situation while she was filming Gaslight extremely uncomfortable. In that film, she was forced to shoot an intimate and romantic scene with Charles Boyer on the first day of production, minutes after meeting the man.
Bergman so disliked the experience of kissing a man she had just met on screen that she vowed never to do it again.
When she was once again asked to film a romantic scene with a man she hardly knew for this film, Bergman took action. She asked Perkins to practice kissing her privately, in her dressing room, before their scene was filmed on camera.
According to Bergman, Perkins obliged, and by the time they performed their scene in front of the camera neither actor found the scene uncomfortable.
Quotes Roger Demarest : You certainly brightened up that party. It was dying, until young love came along. Now they've got something to talk about.
Have you heard about Van der Besh's interior decorator? She did over the apartment and seduced her son at no extra charge.
I think you've got something there Paula. If you'll go in to do the young master's bedroom, why not do the young master? Makes the work so much more interesting.
Was this review helpful to you? A woman forced to look at her mid-life options and trying to recapture the exuberance and passion of youth, a study of loneliness and the curious attraction for a self-centered bully of an old lover versus the volatile, sensitive and slightly morbid younger man.
The text is very short, but is has a poetic , insightful quality and I wouldn't add or take away any page. The English translation was good, but I would still like to try the original French version.
It took one's breath away. View 2 comments. What a tragic little story, but I really enjoyed it. Weirdly enough this reminded me of Barbara Pym's books, only very, very French and sad.
It's about a quiet woman approaching middle age, in a not very happy relationship with a longtime lover who keeps cheating on her.
Not even a spoiler, but: view spoiler [She embarks on an affair with a beautiful much younger man who worships her - but in the end, predictably, she returns to the man she left, and life goes on just as before.
Plus, I've always found the title very intriguing And I do love Brahms. I like the I really do. There are a few paragraphs that seem so unbelievably real.
But the topic of the book isn't the kind of thing that works for me. I just can't feel anything but dislike and disdain for the characters and their actions.
Maybe it's a lack of empathy on my part but it's just so pathetic, they're all so pathetic. Shelves: read I've read two romance novels in my lifetime.
The first, A Prescription for Love or STDs, was about a bunch of physically challenged people with weird eyes that sparkled, flaring nostrils and hair that was unruly.
This, the second, was about a bunch of French lovers. And the French really know how to screw up and complicate love. Or maybe I just don't appreciate love's complexity.
Or maybe I just don't give a shit. Anyway, the lady is old 39 years old! My goodness she's on death's bed.
Her stup I've read two romance novels in my lifetime. Her stupid and thoughtless lover that sleeps with young girls is 41 and the lady's new lover and cause of her confusion is I'm not sure why I state the ages.
Maybe because it's just mentioned in the book a million times. I really must have enough of her, he thought; when I start worrying about a woman's vocabulary, the end is in sight.
What a riot! I'm going back to the crazy Japanese now. Noramlly, I shy away from romantic novels. I made an exception with Aimez vous Brahms , which follows an older woman who has finally left her cheating lover.
She then takes up another lover, a younger man, who defies convention by loving her. Despite the romantic overtones, it really is more a study of an aging woman who tries to change her life, but sadly fails in the end.
I'm afraid they aren't selling any more copies of this book, though. I found mine by chance at Booksale and I haven't seen Noramlly, I shy away from romantic novels.
I found mine by chance at Booksale and I haven't seen another copy since. Like most of the books I've read, this too has been made into a movie starring Ingrid Bergman and Anthony Perkins of Psycho fame as the young lover.
I haven't found a copy of that either. Another romance novel, with a similar concept to a Certain Smile, but, in my honest opinion, with a much deeper conflict within a main character.
She's a mature women, who finds herself between two men. One is old and successful, but she find his company and everyday routine kind of boring, while the other is much younger than her and has a career as an attorney, but his love suggestions, though rejected, make her feel attractive and live again.
Unlike the last title, this one has consequences f Another romance novel, with a similar concept to a Certain Smile, but, in my honest opinion, with a much deeper conflict within a main character.
Unlike the last title, this one has consequences for rejection and stalling, since a person can love or be loved by someone else. The best part of the novel is the problem the main protagonist finds herself in: to accept the passing of the time and embrace maturity or to feel herself joyful in someone's company, disregarding ''conventional rules'' age, sex, faith, ideals, nationality, race etc.
When facing the old age, one must consider his own deeds of the past, the fruits for the present and the plans for the future.
At the moment, this is one of my favorite Sagan's novels and I look forward of seeing what the next titles might bring.
How cheesy of me to be listening to Brahms while reading Aimez-vous Brahms As for the book, I remember my mum had a copy when I was a teenager, but for some reason I never laid my hands on it.
Was it the ugly cover and the poor paper? I find it sad that Sagan sees the forty year old woman as she does, stylish, fancy job and all, How cheesy of me to be listening to Brahms while reading Aimez-vous Brahms I find it sad that Sagan sees the forty year old woman as she does, stylish, fancy job and all, still charming, but for how long?
This is my second Sagan and I would certainly recommend it, but not as a romance. Like Bonjour Tristesse it shows us far more about what can go wrong in a relationship and the impossibility of 'love' than anything else.
From comments made on the film, I imagine that that version is more romantic than the original story, which offers the reader no particularly happy ending.
In BT, I had the feeling that Anne was wise to die in one way or the other and Paule's fate shows us why as she devotes he This is my second Sagan and I would certainly recommend it, but not as a romance.
In BT, I had the feeling that Anne was wise to die in one way or the other and Paule's fate shows us why as she devotes her life to a resurrected version of Raymond!
It's short, and I flew through it in a couple of hours. The film is very true to the book, and the casting--especially of Anthony Perkins--is really spot on.
Roger is supposed to be a big guy, but it's hard to argue against Yves Montand. I love this story. An interesting read for this day and age, despite de slightly old-fashioned narrative style.
Intriguing how regardless the apparent freedom, women were still unable to leave toxic relationships.
It's also a good reflection on the double standard showcased by the French society in the '60s in terms of what was acceptable for women vs.
It made me think of Scott Fitzgerald's novels and love stories. Maybe too "sweet".. Anyway, the movie is magnificent!
A very good book to take a break from serious literature. It feels like you friend reveals her lovestory to you. Why do I do this to myself?
As I read more of Sagan's books the less I like her work, not that I liked it in the beginning, but the writing was more enjoyable.
I'm not exited about this book. I was so happy to started read it, but when it got so boring. It simple and usual story, nothing special, nothing so passionate.
It just a casual book for me, for spending some time in the evening. Some features of WorldCat will not be available. Create lists, bibliographies and reviews: or.
